Printing methods

Different artwork and quantities call for different techniques. Here is how each method works and where it shines.

Sublimation printing

Dye-sublimation ink is printed on transfer paper, then heat and pressure bond it into the mug’s polymer coating, so the colour becomes part of the surface.

Best for
Photos, gradients, full-wrap artwork, small and large runs.
Finish
Smooth and glossy, full colour, no raised edges.
Care
Hand-wash keeps colours bright for longer.

Heat-reactive (magic) mugs

A black coated mug that turns clear where heat touches it. Pour in a hot drink and the hidden full-colour design appears.

Best for
Surprise gifts, birthdays, photo reveals.
Finish
Matte black that reveals a glossy full-colour image.
Care
Hand-wash only, and keep it out of the microwave.

Ceramic decal (kiln-fired)

The artwork is printed on ceramic transfer paper, applied to a glazed mug and fired in a kiln so it fuses into the glaze.

Best for
Premium gifts, large orders, cafés, metallic gold and silver.
Finish
Rich, glossy and very hard-wearing; metallic finishes possible.
Care
Very durable. Metallic decals must not go in the microwave.

Screen printing

Ink is pushed through a mesh stencil, one colour at a time, to build up a bold, opaque design.

Best for
Simple logos in one to three colours, big quantities.
Finish
Solid, opaque colours with a slightly raised ink layer.
Care
Hand-wash recommended.

UV direct printing

UV-curable ink is printed straight onto the surface and hardened instantly under UV light, with no transfer paper.

Best for
Textured or raised effects, short runs, ceramic, metal and glass.
Finish
Vivid colour, with optional raised, tactile detail.
Care
Hand-wash recommended.

Laser engraving

A laser etches the surface or removes the coating to leave a permanent mark. No ink is used.

Best for
Stainless steel and powder-coated tumblers, names and logos.
Finish
Fine, permanent, single-tone etching.
Care
Permanent. Wash by hand and follow the care guide for the tumbler lid.

Artwork tips

A few simple habits give the sharpest, most accurate prints.

  • Send logos as vector files (AI, SVG or PDF) so edges stay sharp.
  • Use photos at 300 DPI or higher at the final print size.
  • Keep important text and faces inside the safe area, away from the handle.
  • For full-wrap designs, extend background colour past the edge (bleed).
  • Share brand colours as HEX or Pantone codes.
  • Avoid hairline strokes and very small text.

Frequently asked questions

Can you print my own photo or logo on a mug?

Yes. Photos, gradients and full-colour logos are best printed with sublimation. Send the highest-resolution image you have and we will prepare it for the shape of the mug.

Are printed mugs dishwasher and microwave safe?

It depends on the method and the mug. Sublimation and fired ceramic decals are generally durable, but hand-washing keeps colours bright for longer. Colour-changing mugs and any mug with metallic gold or silver should be hand-washed and kept out of the microwave.

Which file format should I send?

Vector files (AI, SVG or PDF) are ideal for logos. For photos and other raster artwork, send PNG or JPG at 300 DPI or higher. If you only have a small or blurry logo, tell us and we can help rebuild it.

Will the colours match what I see on screen?

Close, but not always identical. Screens use light (RGB) while printing uses ink, so very bright blues and neons can look softer on ceramic. Check the proof carefully, and share HEX or Pantone codes for brand colours.
